Artists explore peace
Today's visit to the Frost Art Museum at Florida International University in Miami was more like a journey towards peace. The exhibition which just opened is called The Missing Peace: Artists consider the Dalai Lama. It is now touring museums around the world. 89 respected artists representing 30 countries were asked to reflect upon the life and principles of the Dalai Lama, and subsequently, create works of art. What resulted are tapestries, sculptures, paintings, installations and other works which speak to one's soul. They deal with tolerance, impermanence, suffering, serenity and other themes that invite introspection. I was at the Museum as the artists watched their pieces put in place for the opening. I spoke with some of them who told me how this project personally changed them. They weren't necessarily Buddhists, but were deeply impacted by this opportunity to explore the Dalai Lama's lifelong dedication to peace and compassion. They also shared how good it felt to be part of something in which they could inspire people to think about peace. It is the aim of the Missing Peace Project which organized this exhibition to shift the world's attention towards peace. I certainly felt that my own attention was focused on peace while being in the midst of this remarkable art.
