HEDGEBROOK WRITERS IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM 2010
Hedgebrook supports visionary women writers whose stories and ideas shape our culture now and for generations to come. It is a rural retreat on Whidbey Island where women writers come from all over the world to write, rejuvenate and be in community with one another. The residency period is from February - November 2010.
Hedgebrook is open to all women writers, published or not, without regard to race, religion, nationality, age, professional experience, sexual orientation, place of residence, or economic background. Applicants are welcome to reapply if they have not yet been awarded a residency.
Writers come to Hedgebrook from all parts of the world and a variety of cultures, bringing with them a wide range of life experiences. In addition to the time spent in solitude, writers join an intimate and diverse community of six to seven residents at a time who share dinner together each evening, and often share their work and give/receive constructive feedback.
All residents are selected solely on the basis of the anonymous information, essays, and writing sample supplied in their applications. The selection committee’s decisions are final, and do not include comments or critiques of applicants’ work.
Your application must be postmarked no later than September 24, 2009.
THE RETREAT
Hedgebrook is on Whidbey Island, about thirty-five miles northwest of Seattle. Situated on 48-acres of forest and meadow facing Puget Sound, the retreat hosts women writers from all over the world for residencies of two weeks to two months, at no cost to the writer. Residents are housed in six handcrafted cottages, where they spend their days in solitude – writing, reading, taking walks in the woods on the property, on nearby Double Bluff beach or trails around the island. In the evenings, they gather in the farmhouse kitchen to share a home-cooked gourmet meal, their work, their process and their stories. The women who come to Hedgebrook are writing in all genres, and are of all ages, ethnicities, backgrounds and levels of writing experience.
