Thought Leader Call - Social Media

I could use your help understanding what we want out of these calls, and specifically the one on social media. Here are my questions:

1)  Are you interested in the topic and want to be part of the discussion?
2)  Should we keep these intimate by only inviting thought leaders and a few thoughtful guests or should we make them open and invite others who may have interest and little expertise?
3)  Are you comfortable if we record them and post the audio on the IVOH site?
4)  On social media, do you think of yourself as a beginner, intermediate, or a pro?
5)  What question most interests and challenges you about social media (from "how to do it" to "how to keep it from taking over my life" to "how to make money from my Facebook fan page"?

I really loved reading your

I really loved reading your blog. It was very well authored and easy to understand. Unlike additional blogs I have read which are really not tht good. I also found your posts very interesting. In fact after reading, I had to go show it to my friend and he enjoyed it as well! Thanks so much for this! I have not been this thrilled by a blog post for quite some time! You’ve got it, whatever that means in blogging. Anyway, You’re definitely someone that has something to say that people should hear. Keep up the wonderful job. Keep on inspiring the people!1Y0-A05 dumps 310-065 dumps MB2-631 dumps E20-001 dumps 1z0-048 dumps BH0-006 dumps 70-648 dumps PMI-002 dumps

Call set for Monday, Nov. 2 at 11am eastern

Colleagues,

I only heard from 5 others about your availability, and of that group, this coming Monday, Nov. 2 seems the best date.  Sanjeev, can you make this time work?

If a flurry of "I can't make it's" arrives quickly, then I could change to Nov. 13.  Please respond.

The Monday call will take place at 11am eastern but BE CAREFUL since the US is going on daylight savings time on Sunday and will move its clocks back an hour.  Those of you abroad should check the local time for you.

I'll ask Maryalice to arrange a call-in number and I'll post that here and send it by e-mail.  I look forward to talking on Monday.

Social Media Call

I'm looking forward to reconnecting for this social media 101 call. I've got a Twitter account but (shamefully) haven't said "peep," I mean "tweet" in 2 months! So I dutifully went "tweet-tweet" (that's twice today) and hope to stay engaged. I know I'll learn a lot from the rest of you. I'll do some exploration tomorrow on the recommended sites. As for timing, I'm going to make that 11am slot a sacred space floating on my dance card until I hear a final date is selected.

In rainy DC, the sun just peeked out and lit up the golden leaves. Thinking of all of you with a smile.

Social Media Call

Michael,

I have penciled in November 3, November 11 and November 13 - 11am on all three days for the call. Please let me know when a date is confirmed. I will try to be duly diligent in the meantime. On I will be in Boston on November 13 and may have to join by cell phone if that date is picked for the call. Looking forward.

joining from India

Michael -- this is such a rich offer.  The syllabus is pretty daunting, but the call design really works for me.  The challenge is that I am in India until November 16, and the i'net connection is flukey and the page load time for sites is v-e-r-y s-l-o-w.  I will try to join the call using a calling card, but they only seem to be selling 20 minute cards -- so I will be kicked off a number of times and be dialing back in with new card numbers! Having said that, I am very interested.  The only dates I cannot make work will be Nov 11 & 12.  It will be 8:30 pm in India.  Okay -- fingers crossed.  Thank you -- Judy

Next Steps for Social Media Call

Friends,

Results of the social media survey
Nine of us want to participate in a thought leader call about social media.  We prefer to keep this call intimate – a discussion among ourselves with just one or two knowledgeable guests.  Most everyone is willing to have the call recorded and posted on the IVOH Web site, presumably accessible to anyone who finds it there.  After the call, I’ll check with the participants and make sure everyone is comfortable with a public posting.

Last chance to join the participant group
Other thought leaders are welcome to express interest to me and participate in the call – I am sending this note to the full group to make sure everyone is in the loop.

What we will cover
Our group is evenly divided between experienced users of social media and beginners, and humility kept anyone from claiming to be an expert.  Our questions fall into three categories.
1.    How do we use social media to keep up with ideas, people, news and events of interest?
2.    How do we use social media to have meaningful conversations and build collaborative communities?
3.    What are the trends, most interesting uses and best practices in the social media world?

Pre-call homework
Since at least half of us already have experience, I am going to ask several things of the group.

First, for the beginners:  If you have very little experience, please do some prep work.  It will help our conversation if you have used social media tools.  This means starting accounts and filling out profiles on Twitter and Facebook.  You need to start following some people on Twitter (I have a short beginner’s list below mainly from Michele McLellan of folks who tweet about the future of journalism and social media) and “friend” 10-15 people on Facebook (it can be family, school mates, colleagues, celebrities, companies, groups, thought leaders.)  You should write at least 2-3 status updates on Facebook and 2-3 tweets.  I suggest you download Tweetdeck after you sign up for the two sites, because that free software allows you to easily read the feeds from Twitter and Facebook.  Feel free to contact me if you have any trouble with these tasks.  You should start using the tools now and check them daily to read and write tweets and updates within your network.

For everyone, please take a look at the syllabus (http://bit.ly/socmediaskills) from a course on social media being taught this semester at the Columbia J-school.  It has many helpful links, suggestions and readings.  Adam Glenn, one of the profs, will be joining us on our call.

And now for the experienced folks:  I am going to ask each of us to speak for just 2 minutes about how we are currently using social media and what we get out of it.  I’ll also ask us to weigh in on the three questions above during the call.

Use the Thought Leader Forum at IVOH.org
Since we are talking about social media, I want to get away from sending mail to the thought leader listserv and instead use the social tool built into the Thought Leader section of the IVOH.org site.  I’ll post this and all future info about the call in the Thought Leader Forum.  Here’s how you access the social media thread in the forum:
Go to http://www.ivoh.org/forum/thought-leader-call-social-media
You can also log in on the home page of www.ivoh.org, but then you have to do a lot of clicking to get to the Thought Leader Forum, and then the TL Conversation Space.

Scheduling the call
Now the hardest part – finding a date and time that works for most of us.  If possible, I want to shoot for 11am Eastern time, so that Pek can participate at 9pm in Bhutan and Raul can participate at a reasonable 8am Pacific time.  (I hope daylight savings won’t mess this up.)  Post a comment on the TL Forum with answers to these questions:

  - Tell me if 11am eastern would fit your schedule
  - Tell me if any of the following dates do NOT fit into your schedule
        Friday, Oct. 30
        Monday, Nov. 2
        Tuesday, Nov. 3
        Wednesday, Nov. 11
        Thursday, Nov. 12
        Friday, Nov. 13

Thanks for your patience with me.  I had hoped to schedule the call in September.  I am looking forward to this discussion and to future thought leader calls on other topics.

Michael, please count me in. To answer your questions:

1. You betcha.

2. Let's start with thought leaders only.

3. By all means, record.

4. I think I'm an intermediate, but I can hear my grown kids laughing even as I type.

5. What actually has an impact? Is it all incremental, or are there ways to jump-start?

6. You didn't ask, but I thought I'd answer this question, too:

Q: How grateful are you that Michael Skoler has initiated this conversation?

A: My cup runneth over.
