ivoh seeks to expand its volunteer base with newly formed roles

Dear Friends,

Since its inception, Images & Voices of Hope has relied on the generosity and support of volunteers from around the world. These individuals have judged our annual Awards of Appreciation, held media-related dialogues and events, planned our annual media summit, and donated their time to several other projects.

ivoh has grown its staff and capacity in recent years but we still operate lean, with just one full-timer, one part-timer, and another part-time position on the horizon. As a small nonprofit, we’ve seen firsthand how important it is to collaborate with volunteers who want to help us carry out ivoh’s mission.

Many of you have reached out to us recently to ask about volunteering, and we haven’t always followed up with meaningful matches. We want to change that — by creating specific volunteer roles and being more diligent about matching individuals with roles that align with their experience, skill sets, and interests.

We recently created new volunteer positions (see below) that we would like to fill over the next two months. We are looking for individuals who care deeply about ivoh’s mission and who have the time and energy to commit to volunteering. We encourage you to take a look at the roles and, if you’re interested, write us a note by Friday, Nov. 4, explaining which role you’d like to fill and why you think you’d be a good fit. (Don’t see a role that’s quite the right fit? Email us with another proposed role or idea.) We will review each letter and select and notify volunteers by the end of the year.

We plan to recognize and celebrate our volunteers with a special dinner at our annual media summit, which will be held June 22-25 in the Catskill Mountains of New York. We sincerely hope you will consider joining ivoh’s new volunteer team and contributing to the media’s role as an agent of change and world benefit. If you don’t have time to volunteer but would like to support ivoh’s work, you can do so by making a tax-deductible donation.

Meredith Porte, who has donated countless hours of service to ivoh since its inception, had this to say about her experience: “Images and Voices of Hope has brought meaning and fulfillment to my life and work since I attended the first conversation over 18 years ago. It has repeatedly shown me the power that stories have to uplift and bring possibility to the world. I have felt so very lucky to be part of a cause that has become more important than ever over the years.”

We hope you will join us and have a similar experience. We look forward to hearing from you — and ultimately collaborating with you — over the coming weeks and months.

Warmly,

~Mallary

VOLUNTEER ROLES

SUMMIT

ivoh’s annual media summit is the organization’s signature event. Our 2017 summit will convene media practitioners who have embraced the Restorative Narrative genre, as well as those who want to learn more about it. We will explore this genre in collaboration with the leaders of other important storytelling genres, including constructive journalism, solutions-oriented storytelling, and peace-related storytelling.

ROLE: Speaker and attendee recruiters

DESCRIPTION: At ivoh, we define “media” broadly — to include journalism, documentary film, marketing/advertising, gaming, photography, and the arts. Our annual media summit attracts speakers and attendees from these various media fields. We’re looking for people who can recommend and put us in touch with prospective speakers and attendees in these various sectors. We would like to find one to two volunteers for each sector.

TIME COMMITMENT: Monthly phone and/or email outreach from November through May, plus monthly planning calls from November to June. The calls will provide you with an opportunity to interact with ivoh staff and trustees and share planning-related ideas.

ROLE: Youth ambassador

DESCRIPTION: We are eager to invite early career professionals to our summit and need someone who can help us reach out to them and keep them engaged after they’ve registered. We also envision the youth ambassador running a youth-related Facebook group to help build camaraderie among younger attendees leading up to the summit.

TIME COMMITMENT: An average of a couple hours per month from November through June.

ROLE: Copy editor

DESCRIPTION: We’re looking for someone with copy editing experience who can do a final edit on our summit program, which will be distributed to all attendees.

TIME COMMITMENT: The equivalent of about a day’s worth of work (spread out) in June 2017.

AWARDS OF APPRECIATION

Every year, ivoh holds an Awards of Appreciation ceremony at our summit to recognize media practitioners whose work has created meaningful awareness and change.

ROLE: Awards judge

DESCRIPTION: We are in need of a small group of individuals who will help us review finalists and select our 2017 award winners. We are looking for people from a variety of media sectors who, (preferably), have past experience judging awards.

TIME COMMITMENT: A few hours reviewing finalists’ applications, along with a one- to two-hour group call with the other judges to share recommendations and decide on winners. The judging will likely take place in March.

ROLE: Designer

DESCRIPTION: We’re looking for someone to design a four- to five-page program that we’ll distribute during our Awards Ceremony at the summit. The program will be distributed to all summit attendees and sponsors.

TIME COMMITMENT: The equivalent of about a day’s worth of work (spread out) in May 2017.

RESTORATIVE NARRATIVE FELLOWSHIP

ivoh will launch its third annual Restorative Narrative Fellowship in February 2017. Five fellows will be chosen to receive a $2,500 stipend and will spend six months telling Restorative Narratives in various communities.

ROLE: Mentor

DESCRIPTION: ivoh’s Restorative Narrative Fellows work closely with story coach Jacqui Banaszynski throughout the six-month fellowship. In 2017, we would like to take our support of the fellows a step further — by pairing them with a mentor who has specific expertise in their media field. We are looking for individuals who would be available on an as-needed basis to talk with a fellow, share ideas and feedback on their project, answer related questions, etc. Specifically, we’d like mentors from the fields of documentary film, gaming/virtual reality, the arts, and photography.

TIME COMMITMENT: An average of a couple of hours per month from February to July 2017. The time commitment is flexible, and will be determined by the individual fellows and mentors.

REGIONAL EVENTS

In 2017, ivoh plans to launch a series of smaller regional events around the country.

ROLE: Conveners

DESCRIPTION: We’re interested in finding a handful of volunteers in different parts of the country who would work with ivoh staff to organize ivoh meet-ups. These meet-ups would provide opportunities for past summit attendees and other members of the ivoh community to come together in smaller group settings throughout the year. We envision these events taking a variety of forms — film screenings, informal dinners, guided reflections, and more. In addition to holding our annual regional event in Miami, Florida, we’re especially interested in building our presence in New Orleans, Detroit, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and Boston.

TIME COMMITMENT: The equivalent of an hour or two a week for two to three months leading up to the event, plus time spent at the actual event.
