Washington, D.C. – J-Lab: The Institute for Interactive Journalism at American University has been awarded $250,000 from the McCormick Foundation to fund eight innovative women-led news startups over the next two years.

Under the grant, eight winners (four in 2012 and four in 2013) will each be given an initial $12,000 to launch their ideas.

Applications must be postparked by Oct. 1 for $40,000 and $20,000 journalism fellowships from the Alicia Patterson Foundation. Print journalists with five years of experience (including freelancers and photojournalists) and who work for U.S. publications here or overseas are eligible. Full-year fellows are given a stipend of $40,000; six month fellowships are $20,000.
