Voices & Values of Journalism: Editor's Note

In an ever-shifting media landscape, the importance of voices and values remains unchanged. Who tells the stories and what voices are heard can frame a piece, guide the narrative and shape its content. No less essential are the values that a journalist brings to his or her reporting, writing, editing and photography. At the same time, a journalist may find those personal and professional values in conformity or in conflict.

In this collection of personal essays, 23 journalists share their thoughts and experiences while defining the values that help guide their work. They write about who inspires their journalism, what challenges their decision-making and why certain events are influential. Some reflect on hurdles to overcome, accomplishments to savor and questions that persist. Others talk about why it is important to seek truth, honor duty, remain independent and magnify the voices of those who, too often, are missing from the media spotlight.

These journalists work in various media and report from around the world. They teach, mentor and counsel students and professionals alike. In their essays, they write in differing styles from different perspectives, but together they embrace the theme that we can learn from one another in the personal stories we share.
