Lori teaches reporting, writing and sports journalism at the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC). Last year, MediaShift named her one of 20 top innovators in journalism education. She runs a student news bureau that covers national and international track and field competitions; her students’ work has appeared in 37 publications, including The Miami Herald and Runner’s World. Her research interests include journalism education and the links between communities and journalism, with a focus on coverage of mass shootings. Before teaching, Shontz spent 20 years covering sports, women’s issues and higher education at major U.S. newspapers.
