Martha is a national writer and visual journalist for The Associated Press and is based in Chicago. As a member of the AP’s Global Enterprise Team, her stories — told in print, video and photos — often detail the lives of young adults and teens, as well as neighborhoods, with topics ranging from poverty, education and environmental issues to the ways tech impacts everyday lives. Her multimedia work has been recognized by the Webby Awards, the National Edward R. Murrow Awards, the AP Managing Editors (APME) and the National Headliner Awards, among others. She also received a Studs Terkel Award, an honor given to journalists who go beyond official sources to tell the stories of everyday people.
Project Description: Martha’s project will focus on a Chicago neighborhood decimated by the 2008 housing crisis that is fighting its way back, home by home, neighbor by neighbor. Through interviews, archival photos, visual data and her own photo and video work, she will tell the story of this comeback and ultimately, answer a seemingly simple yet complex question: What is home?
